Increasing legalization and reduction in stigma have resulted in historic geriatric use of cannabis.

University of California San Diego School of Medicine researchers reported in a 2020 study in the Journal of the American Geriatrics Society that 15 percent of seniors in a 568 patient survey reported having used cannabis to treat pain, anxiety, and insomnia.

Researchers also found that 61 percent of the patients who used cannabis had initiated use after age 60.

“New users were more likely to use cannabis for medical reasons than for recreation,” one of the paper’s authors said. “Also, they were more likely to inform their doctor about their cannabis use, which reflects that cannabis use is no longer as stigmatized as it was previously.”

Seniors groups support medical cannabis.

In 2019, the AARP Board of Directors affirmed its support of medical cannabis for seniors in states where it has been legalized.

The policy noted that "decisions related to the use of medical marijuana should be made between a patient and their health care provider."

Many peer-reviewed studies have validated cannabis as a relatively safe and effective pain treatment protocol for seniors, particularly when compared to opioids and other advice prescription medication.
